Edmonds Arts Festival

Over Father’s Day we went to the Art Festival in Edmonds, WA and had a great time. Our 6 year old daughter had a painting on display for her school and there were a lot of promising artists to be seen from the multitude of children’s art.

There were lots of choices in food, great household decorating from wall art to items to snazzy up the garden. It was easy enough to find a wish list big enough to empty one’s bank account! For those of you who have followed my blog, you know jewelry and stones have a very special place in my heart.

There were probably 20 or more jewelry artists on hand myself not being one of them. The jewelry ranged from crafty kitsch to commercial in efforts, but as always there were a few I found that had something in their design or artistic endeavors different worth mentioning.

I found a very earthy and fun artist in Zena McCoy who runs Semilla designs, she crafts jewelry from various unique seeds. While looking great is one thing, but how about light weight? Yes I hardly noticed what I tried on, this is definitely jewelry that will not weigh you down.

I also found a sweetheart of an artist in Mandy Allen who runs Allen metal arts out of Protland, Or.  She had clean contemporary work with lots of color and urban style. She was open to explaining her processes and was really someone who cares about their work.

The display ran by Dale and Karen Snyder was a fun three dimensional treat. They used weaved, knotted, and twisted metal wire. Around glass, stone, and even covered the ground from precision to freeform work. As a couple they were funny, engaging and warm, that lent a lot to how their display felt and definitely made you want to stay!  They will be happy to see you at Ential River Glass & Jewelry

Alice Macdonald runs Chrysalis and has a real eye and execution to let you into a world of fantasy. Her jewelry has a bit of free form to it, but it is really one of the few artistic designs that I felt merited a real shot in the arm. Her designs are like stepping into another time and place, one where you do not have to be yourself. Her art is as special as the best costumes are, in the way they can take you away to somewhere else. Her vision is hers and anyone of us would be lucky to own one of her matched sets!

There were a few artists like Beate Degen, her work was great and earthy, but I really felt you all need to catch her work while you can! Her work is so underpriced it is a steal for all of us! Catch her work at shows and earthworthjewels.com.

I must say Vincent LaRochelle was like a throwback to a time of innocence. His work reminded me of when artists had the ability to be openly free, more than our daily routines in the modern era can provide.  The one thing I feel most people will not see in his work is the quality and uniqueness of the stones he cuts. Hands down he had the best colors and vision in his cuts and choices. Go see his work at Designslarochelle.com.

Terrance Deemer and his partner Michele Black had very modern visions and organic styling. The magnetic clasps they had designed were so simple and solid and that set them apart from anything else at the show that was even in a similar vein. Catch their work at upcoming shows and at esoterica-id.com.

Outside of jewelry I have to mention Pamela Milewski of Merry Canyon Studio. Her wood work was clean and precise but had such a great feel it even made my artist husband stop and really look. From furniture to decorating her work is at home and is a joy to look at. Yes you can have functional cabinets and small trunks, dark woods and light woods, all of which is very, very special. See her work at merrycanyonstudio.com.

Seattle hot spots Coffee stop

Welcome to the SEATTLE HOT SPOTS It's Friday and time for some review of our favorite places.

Well sometimes the best stops are the ones that catch you by surprise. When you live in an area tainted with coffee houses every 30 feet for miles, you can be a bit jaded and a bit less impressed by what has become just another me too scenario. Like every pile of rocks has the potential for gems, so does the coffee Mecca of the Seattle area, one of these gems is the Richmond Beach Coffee Co. We have come to loathe the idea of another sterile coffee and internet genera yuppie hangout, so when we stopped to get a cup of wake me up we were not expecting much to say the least, but a treat was in store for us.

How about a friendly smile and a great attitude by the whole staff…hmmm sure beats the surly art institute graduate who is relegated to pour mass crap to pay off wasted school loans. To add a pleasant décor and warm sunlight coming through a large windowed store front, added to what will be a regular stop for our family. How about the coffee? Well we ordered two zebra latte’s and were so happy when they tasted better than they looked, smooth and not a bit of the over roasted starbunk clone-a-rama that has become the northwest business model.

My favorite picture of Lexi

It was fun drinking coffee at this coffee shop

Alexcia was a bit sad that the coffee was gone and she wanted more.

Check them out for yourself when you have the inclination as to what Seattle should be, or look them up at Richmond Beach Coffee Co . If you don’t tip this staff you are nuts and should be locked up, don’t trust us…trust your sense of what is right!

Space Needle Restaurant

In the first PART of our review we gave some tips now time for the testy part.
My husband ordered the crab cakes for an appetizer….Damn they were good, got two and could have eaten a hundred! At the same time he got me a mudslide that was a dessert to start the meal, that man does not care about my hips! My husband ordered the Smashed Rye for his drink, let me tell you I liked his drink more and boy howdy it had some kick! Sky city drinks
Of course there was bread, but let me tell you the flavored butters they came with were fantastic.

For our meal he ordered me fresh from the sound Salmon with asparagus and fingerling potatoes, while he made a scene in the restaurant by getting the whole fried Rockfish for himself, with wasabi mashed potatoes and lemon spinach.

Travel Seattle
My husband had lunch at the needle 20 years ago and was not impressed, this night was completely different, we both looked at the bill for $200.00 at the end of the evening and felt it was more than fair. Our waiter Fabio was from Brazil and was fantastic, welcoming and entertaining while always on top of it all! The food kicked booty and we walked away full and with a killer set of flavors in our mouths!

We capped the night off with local berry made iced teas, (yes the alcohol kind) and we split a warm chocolate drizzle cake with vanilla ice cream. The only hard part of the night was that it had to end. Kudos to the staff at the Space Needle for providing such an opportunity, take advantage of it yourself!

Space Needle restaurant

An evening at the Space Needle restaurant

The evening was a dream come true, after almost 6 years of living in Seattle we finally got a chance to visit the historical Sky City restaurant in the Space needle. Well 6 years was too long, I had always thought of the Space Needle as a tourist location rather than a destination for pleasure. When the time came for me and my husband to have a date at the Space Needle I was more than a little nervous. A new place and a new experience, plus a rare night out without children to clean up after!

Our reservation was set at 5:15pm and we made sure to arrive there around 4pm to have time to walk around and take some nice pictures to remember the night by. We parked our car at the convention center covered parking, but had we known that valet parking was so close in price we could have saved a few blocks walk!

When you decide to have your evening there, make sure you set your reservation up weeks in advance. We could get one only at 5:15 pm, as all others were booked. We wanted a bit later in the evening, but it worked out just fine as we got to see the sunset from the upper observation deck. Your elevator ride and time on the observation deck are included when you have a meal.

Tip 1. Advance reservation is a MUST

Tip 2. Parking you have many options

Tip 3. Arrive early to get a window seat, first come first served.

Tip 4. Have cash on hand as with parking as well as all there is to do in the area, it is nice to not have to hunt for an ATM!

I couldn’t believe that entire restaurant would rotate 360 degrees, showing the whole city and Puget Sound. The first 30 minutes I was trying to collect myself, because all my emotions were screaming “Wow!” as the smells the views and the service just kept coming. I thought that I wouldn’t need to eat and just enjoy all the views, but the first appetizer and drink sure cured that idea!

Gay pride parade 2009 in Seattle

Well I never expected this to happen on my 4th anniversary of arriving in USA, I celebrated with family and friends at Seattle’s gay pride parade. If somebody had told me about this show several years ago, I would have told “NEVER will I go there! ” So life is constantly changing and you never know what you will do in the future.
We got a spot in the shade and after the first hour we were cold, but we never thought to go home.
It was the first parade which was so long for me; it was from 11 till 2 pm … Can you guess how many people were there? We saw clowns (not sad or happy, more the freaky kinky type) we saw fun floats and lots of companies who offered support to the community. OK there were a few nude people and some kink too, but mostly what we saw were people letting their hair down and have fun in the sun!
Coming from another country I was not prepared for what I saw, but I found myself simply caught up in the fun. Plus watching our daughter and friends dancing and laughing was just contagious and inspiring, more than I expected and a great time was had by all. My husband took some great photos while we cut loose, so here are a few to share a great day with you!

Hunting for sea glass in the Seattle area

After watching a few TV shows about hunting sea glass on the beaches around San Francisco, I was inspired to try this experience myself. Living in Seattle with the tons of beaches in the area, I thought to myself… why not? I asked my husband to show me some places where glass might be found and we jumped in the car and started down the road. That in itself is an adventure; there are so many water front parks in the region.

I had my doubts to whether we would find anything, but it was so cool we found many different pieces the first time out. Within 15-20 minutes I found a few spots amongst the rocks where the glass seemed to settle on the beach. The wind was blowing strong from the west, but the bad weather didn’t stop me from digging through the wet and rough stones to find the glass I wanted. I found several pieces of amber, green, white, and the most beautiful orange glass.

Our daughter also has a blast turning over stones to discover all the different small crabs and throwing stones to the tide. It was a great time together as a family.

Now I’m waiting for the next Sunday and praying for the weather to cooperate, I want to go
hunting for more glass!
