Edmonds Arts Festival

Over Father’s Day we went to the Art Festival in Edmonds, WA and had a great time. Our 6 year old daughter had a painting on display for her school and there were a lot of promising artists to be seen from the multitude of children’s art. 

There were lots of choices in food, great household decorating from wall art to items to snazzy up the garden. It was easy enough to find a wish list big enough to empty one’s bank account! For those of you who have followed my blog, you know jewelry and stones have a very special place in my heart.

There were probably 20 or more jewelry artists on hand myself not being one of them. The jewelry ranged from crafty kitsch to commercial in efforts, but as always there were a few I found that had something in their design or artistic endeavors different worth mentioning.

I found a very earthy and fun artist in Zena McCoy who runs Semilla designs, she crafts jewelry from various unique seeds. While looking great is one thing, but how about light weight? Yes I hardly noticed what I tried on, this is definitely jewelry that will not weigh you down.

I also found a sweetheart of an artist in Mandy Allen who runs Allen metal arts out of Protland, Or.  She had clean contemporary work with lots of color and urban style. She was open to explaining her processes and was really someone who cares about their work.

The display ran by Dale and Karen Snyder was a fun three dimensional treat. They used weaved, knotted, and twisted metal wire. Around glass, stone, and even covered the ground from precision to freeform work. As a couple they were funny, engaging and warm, that lent a lot to how their display felt and definitely made you want to stay!  They will be happy to see you at Ential River Glass & Jewelry

Alice Macdonald runs Chrysalis and has a real eye and execution to let you into a world of fantasy. Her jewelry has a bit of free form to it, but it is really one of the few artistic designs that I felt merited a real shot in the arm. Her designs are like stepping into another time and place, one where you do not have to be yourself. Her art is as special as the best costumes are, in the way they can take you away to somewhere else. Her vision is hers and anyone of us would be lucky to own one of her matched sets!

There were a few artists like Beate Degen, her work was great and earthy, but I really felt you all need to catch her work while you can! Her work is so underpriced it is a steal for all of us! Catch her work at shows and earthworthjewels.com.

I must say Vincent LaRochelle was like a throwback to a time of innocence. His work reminded me of when artists had the ability to be openly free, more than our daily routines in the modern era can provide.  The one thing I feel most people will not see in his work is the quality and uniqueness of the stones he cuts. Hands down he had the best colors and vision in his cuts and choices. Go see his work at Designslarochelle.com.

Terrance Deemer and his partner Michele Black had very modern visions and organic styling. The magnetic clasps they had designed were so simple and solid and that set them apart from anything else at the show that was even in a similar vein. Outside of jewelry I have to mention Pamela Milewski of Merry Canyon Studio. Her wood work was clean and precise but had such a great feel it even made my artist husband stop and really look. From furniture to decorating her work is at home and is a joy to look at. Yes you can have functional cabinets and small trunks, dark woods and light woods, all of which is very, very special. Wedding Jewelry Challenge. Day 3 - 5

Welcome to my 2012 Wedding Jewelry Challenge. After too many excited news I'm trying to catch up with my planed challenge.

Today I'm going to post 3 items which I created for the wedding challenge.
They are already listed at RitaSunderland.com and waiting for the brides.

For my Day Three challenge it will be Sterling Silver Necklace. As only I found those swirl tubes I fall in love with them. They are light and very delicate. I was inspired by the sweetheart neckline wedding dresses style. Nice coin pearl pendant as a part of this necklace.

For my Day Four I went with Pink Quartz earrings. Very unusual twisted shape gemstones and sterling silver. Very cute and adorable. They can be made as a bridesmade gifts if baby pink is your wedding colors. Take a look at those cute earrings.

For my Day Five I made matching Pink quartz bracelet with sterling silver. 3 twisted stones and bright silver chain. Not to much and not to little. Just add some sparkle for the evening lights.

2012 MTV - what's next ?!

Believing in positive thinking and the law of attraction

I always knew if you doing what you want to do and not what you need to do, that you are in a harmony with yourself. You are not stressing out; you simply enjoy your life and are attracting more and more good things in your life. I know finding this is not easy during these times. So as only you will dig in and find the right road for yourself, everything will come to fruition with happy colors.

It was only one month ago I discovered information about The Artisan Group and I joined this group of artisans. My discovery was too late to participate in the gift lounge event at the 2012 Oscars. As luck would have it, the next big event is MTV movie awards. Most of the available spots were already reserved as well and only business cards spots were left.

I spent a couple of days thinking whether or not I should join this event. Life is like a game, you make rules and you spend the rest of your life modifying these rules to grow as you grow. So I said to myself: “If I sell one brand new design necklace within this week, then it will be a sign that I need to participate in the 2012 MTV event.” Well today was the day! One of my wedding necklaces sold within 10 hours being posted.

Now as fate would have it I and my business cards will be a part of the 2012 MTV Movie Award TAG team! I hope someone discovers me and my jewelry creations!

Wedding Challenge. Day Two.

Good afternoon to everybody who is following me on my Wedding Jewelry Challenge. Today is my second day - and so far so good. After settle down from great news (I will post about this later) I finished beautiful cream color pearls and rock crystal necklace.

Wedding Challenge. Day One.

Wedding Jewelry Challenge

What is the biggest dream of most women? Typically it is the dream of finding a perfect love and a white wedding. In Russia most common month for weddings is September. So, I asked myself the other day :

“What is the most popular wedding month in USA?”

After searching I found out that the most popular wedding months in United States are May 13.21%, June 15.97% and July 11.53%.

I need to encourage myself to design as many handmade wedding jewelry pieces as I can by wedding season, I will challenge myself to make at list one new piece a day. Our life is very unpredictable by nature and I don’t know if I can accomplish this, but I’ll aim to do most of it.

My goal is to design jewelry using most popular wedding colors, most common dress styles, and to enhance different body shapes etc. Every day I’ll be posting one new design of jewelry here and directly to my website RitaSunderland.com where you can find those pieces for sale at the Wedding collection.

If you are artistic and are making jewelry, then would like to take a challenge with me? Feel free to post your creations, it’s not necessary to post every day. Even if you will make 2-3 nice designs it’ll be great to share with the world.

So what does infinity mean to you? Everyone has different representations to symbolize its meaning. During the creation of these pieces I had hot thought of the simple versions kike: forever, never ending, or without end. I was inspired by beyond, whether my creations were beyond or not was not the idea. I wanted simplicity to show the owner of these lovely pieces, they are meant to simply embellish your beauty and not be focal pieces, nor are they to out shine the stones. Just to simply show that you are beyond and your statement is you and that is infinite because we all are ever-changing. Welcome back to my readers. The other day there was finally a bit of sunshine here in Seattle and my daughter Alexcia (5 years old) was digging through my gemstones trying to take part in a new creation. Then she stopped and said, “I wish I had a beautiful necklace and bracelet”. So I thought why not? When she was 2-3 years old I was trying to make her some bracelets, but you know (if you’ve got baby girl)… we all want to put pretty and shiny things on them since the day they were born. However the truth is that usually most items ended up broken or thrown out of the stroller. Now that she turned five, she wanted jewelry and pretty things for herself. Good for her and for me, because now I know she will not ruin her new jewelry.
After I made a couple of sets, the fun parts began; she was modeling her new treasures. With great weather that day and the new jewelry made especially for her, it set the perfect mood for some photo shots and the results were just awesome.
“Little divas”, became the name of the new jewelry line for the cutest of girls. The whole idea was to make the same quality and design ideas like I make for adults. This meant using natural stones and pearls set in sterling silver or gold filled settings.
Now I need your help as my potential buyers:

• Kids jewelry do you think it is a good idea? Yes or No
• Natural materials or synthetics, which do you want to see on your children?
• Will your daughter wear jewelry, just like mommy?
• What do you think a good price range for high quality items for girls should be?

Old style but new look

Macrame is one of the world’s oldest crafts which continue to survive in different mediums throughout the years. Most popular are plant hangers, how else can such a variety of pot hangers be made to create so many different looks from only a few inexpensive materials. I remember back in the 80-90^th Macrame Curtains were also popular and I was the one of those who could make it. One of my latest creation black hemp necklace with moonstone pendant. By using only 2 knots you might create something like this. In this necklace I used Chinese crown knot and double half hitch knots The hardest knot is Chinese one, but after couple hours of practice and most important potions you will get there and believe me you will be proud of yourself. So here are examples of these 2 knots. Try and you’ll find it interesting!

Rare cut stones - amethyst

The other day when I was shopping my favorite place with tones of beautiful gemstones I spotted this lovely rich color amethyst. They are so clean with no inclusions at all. Interesting shape take my attention. It’s not a trillion cut – it’s more like dipyramid. I didn’t know this word in English (as you know – I’m Russian – and some English words are still mystery for me) – so one more new thing I learned today.
The most funny thing what happened – when I was making photos of the earrings I didn’t even see this, but when I came home and start working with photos – I noticed that the wire was putted in a heart shape .
